Mantras
The Universe runs on vibration. Specific mantras/words are used to tune in to a specific vibration. The spectrum of light operates on different vibrations/frequencies. Mantras are designed to better assist the meditator in activating a certain chakra, or energy pattern. Amplifying the vibrations of such in order to obtain specific results. Although Mantras really only do so much, in question of how it fares versus raw physical/spiritual power.
Here is a list of Sanskrit mantras you may use in activating the vibrations of the seven core chakras:
Maum - Crown (7th) chakra
MM-AH-UU-MM
Thaum - Mind (6th) chakra
TH-AH-UU-MM
Haum - Throat (5th) chakra
HH-AH-UU-MM
Yaum - Heart (4th) chakra
YY-AH-UU-MM
Raum - Solar (3rd) chakra
RR-AH-UU-MM
Vaum - Sacral (2nd) chakra
VV-AH-UH-MM
Laum - Base (1st) chakra
LL-AH-UU-MM
Aum - General mantra used for meditating.
AH-UU-MM
It is important that you are relaxed and comfortable in doing a certain meditation. You want to speak the mantra comfortably and relaxed. Do not force a mantra, or strain yourself in saying it. Speak it out smoothly and calmly. You want to have it to where you feel a good "hum" or "buzz" going with the chakras. A "feel-good" light that makes you feel safe and secure. Remember to be aware and in control of yourself, and not a blinded fool "being" controlled. Know yourself and what you are doing.
When breathing between mantras, imagine your entire body breathing, fill your entire lungs. Breath in a bright light. Golden-white light, like that of the Sun, is commonly used, as all colors are derived from the color white. Though for a specific mantra you may like to use the color of the chakra you are working on.
When saying the mantra. Remember to take long, deep breaths. Hold. Speak the mantra on the long exhale.
It is helpful to speak the mantras in sets. Such as 2's, 5's, 7's, 8's, 13's, 20's, 40's, etc.
Numbers have their own meanings. "Patterns" that have specific effects when used.
Notes on pronunciation:
In saying "UU-UU". You are not saying the mantra so much "outwards", as you are, inwards. It is not so much as an "Oom", or an "Uhm, but somewhere in between, like a hybrid of the two. Saying it in somewhat of an "under" pronunciation. Having your mouth over it when you say it. Develop an awareness of the energies being performed when saying it. Tinker with it in order to harness the full benefit of the mantra.
When saying a mantra, it is important to focus the vibrations of the mantra on the chakra you desire to activate/empower. Raising the vibrations of the chakra helps to empower it, and allow it to function more efficiently. So when using the mantra "Maum", you want to focus the vibrations of your MM-AH-UU-MM on your crown chakra, located at the top of your head.
Thaum. "Th" targets the "Third Eye" chakra, which is an extension of the Mind (6th) chakra, located in the center of the brain. Feel the "Th" vibrating your third eye chakra, and more importantly the 6th chakra. The third eye won't function very well if the 6th chakra isn't. Followed with -aum, be sure to get a good spin going with the 6th chakra. Be mindful of the rear extension when focusing on the front extension. More info on the chakras here.
Raum. It helps develop a "roll" of the R's, such as with the Spanish language. R-R-R-R-R. Do not get frustrated in doing this. Do the best you can in rolling the R's when using "Raum".

Basically, the mantras help to awaken and increase the rotations/vibrations of the chakra(s) you are working on. Remember to align the chakras, so the energies may flow properly with them. Again, information on alignment of the chakras may be found here.
You do not always need to use a mantra in "speaking" it. You may even simply "think" it. Get into a meditative state and quietly "think" the mantra, if speaking it out loud is not a suitable option.

The above mantras are derived from the Sanskrit language, which is a language that dates back many thousands of years back, and is a deeply spiritual language. In times of confusion, I have used "Satan" as a mantra. Besides being a name, it is also the Sanskrit word for "Truth". In using "Satan" as a mantra, it may assist in clearing up confusion and awakening one's self to the truth.
It may be said in a variety of ways. Go with whatever feels best for you. You may say it as:
SS-AH-TT-AH-NN
or
SS-AY-TT-AH-NN
or
SS-AH-TH-AH-NN
or
SS-AY-TH-AH-NN
I haven't used it as a mantra too often, but I also haven't been in too much of a spot to speak mantras, so I would not go to say I am experienced in using it as a mantra. I have spoken it as several, though I believe it may best be spoken as "SS-AH-TT-AH-NN". It is really up to the individual to decide what pronunciation works well for them, or if they decide to use it as a mantra at all.
